Congratulations and Thanks are in Order!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in Contest Day.  Judges informed me that members were well prepared, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their presentations.  That is always nice to hear.  Also, thanks to those who participated in the new event at Contest Day – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  This event consisted of members making a piece of clothing from recyclable items that would have otherwise ended up in the landfill.  It was great to see our youth come up with great ideas and great pieces of clothing.

Congratulations also go out to everyone who survived another 4-H Camp.  Each of our past two camps has presented unique challenges.  Last year there was no kitchen staff, so we had to provide our own cooks.  This year there were problems with the water supply.  As soon as we became aware of the water issues, we took immediate steps to avoid problems.  Because of the camp manager’s swift response, we managed to keep our campers safe.  Thanks to campers and counselors who responded well to a less than great situation.

A great big thank you goes out to all the clubs who have donated to the trophy fund for Project Judging Day.  We appreciate your support in providing awards to those who have worked hard in their project areas.

Also congratulations go out to our State Jr. and Sr. Hippology Contest Teams:

Sr:  Mara Carducci, Winnie Shell, Malaina Karkoska – 12th place

Sr:  Casey Louk, Misty Heck, Jessica Louk, Brandie Bonar – 17th place

Jr:  Emily Pizzoferrato,Alexa Valusk, Kaitlyn Dahlem – 12th place

Jr:  Allison Lamantia, Allison Pizzoferrato, Emily Lamantia – 18th place

Everyone put in a lot of work and represented our county very well at the state level.   We are very proud of their efforts.  If you are interested in participating in Hippology, contact Robin Wedlake (264-1701) or Faye Verhovec (733-7875).

We still have a lot of 4-H to go…Skillathon, Project Judging and Fair!

State Fair ResultsIf you go to the State Fair this year, please write down your results and mail, email or drop them off at the Extension office.  It is difficult to keep up with all the members who go, so we need your help in reporting your success.

Goat BarnThere have been a few requests to have attendants in the goat barn during the fair.  If you are interested in volunteering some of your fair time to help with this request, please contact me.  Thank you!

Ohio 4-H Teen Conference Keynote Speaker – Could It Be You?

The State 4-H Office is trying a new approach for selecting a keynote speaker for the 2008 Ohio 4-H Teen Conference.  Because so many 4-Her’s have wonderful stories to tell, they would like to select a current or former member to be the keynote speaker.  Auditions will be in October and selections will occur in February.  If you are interested in this unique opportunity, call me for more information.

Joseph Says … Building a  Budget

Managing money can help us gain a perspective and control over a significant part of our lives.  Below are some basics to help you build a budget.  Get some paper and pencil and begin your budget.

·            Record your expenses.  Think ahead, include those that don’t occur each month (driver’s license, vacations, medical and dental).  Be sure to include gifts for holidays, birthdays and special occasions; your savings (not to spend); and emergency money (usually 3-6 months of expenses).

·            Divide all expenses into monthly amounts (example:  licenses plates are $60 per year – that breaks down to $5 monthly).  Add all your monthly expenses.

·            Record your income.  Include part-time jobs, tax returns, garage sales, etc.  Your expenses should equal your income.  If income is higher, increase categories (such as savings or car replacement).  If expenses are higher, you can reduce expenses (be creative), increase income or a little of both.

·            This is challenging, but life-changing.  Call me at the Extension office, if you would like help.  – Joseph J. Maiorano, Extension Educator, FCS
