Ohio Farm Income

Cash receipts from Ohio livestock, livestock products, and crops totaled $5.34 billion in 1997, 11.4 percent above last year's record $4.80 billion. Cash receipts from livestock in 1997 were 3.8 percent below the 1996 cash receipts from livestock. Cash receipts from all crops in 1997 were up 21.8 percent from 1996.

The 1997 cash receipts from all crops products set a new record high at $3.48 billion, up 21.8 percent from last year and 11.8 percent above the previous record set in 1995.. The percentage of total farm marketings earned by livestock and livestock products was 34.8 percent, 5.7 points below last year.

The 1997 value of cash crops, at 3.48 billion, was the largest ever recorded in this category. This value was up 21.8 percent from 1996 and 11.8 percent above 1995. The percentage of total farm marketings attributable to crops in 1997 was 65.0 percent, 5.5 points above last year and the third highest percent of total on record.

Government payments totaled $186.4 million, 14.3 percent above last year but 56.8 percent less than the record high $431.9 million paid out in 1987. This represents 3.4 percent of all total cash receipts including government payments and 9.6 percent of net farm income. In 1987 the record high government payments accounted for 54 percent of net farm income.

Agriculture in Ohio made a net value added contribution of $2.99 billion to the National economy in 1997, up 27.3 percent from the previous year. This contribution amounts to 3.2 percent of the $92.8 billion U.S. agricultural sector. The final agricultural sector output, at $6.35 billion, was 11.0 percent from 1996. Intermediate consumption outlays totaled $2.59 billion down slightly from last year. Capital consumption at $764.4 million was up 2.2 percent from last year, while factor payments at $1,059.1 million were down 5.3 percent.

The top five commodity groups in 1996 in terms of cash receipts earned were; soybeans with $1.36 billion, 25.4 percent of total receipts; corn $964.0 million, 18.0 percent of total; milk $583.2 million, 10.9 percent; greehouse & nursery products, 525.2 million, 9.8 percent, poultry & eggs, $517.5 million, 9.7 percent of total cash receipts. The shifting of greenhouse and nursery from fifth place to fourth place, replacing poultry in the rankings of these top five commodities in 1997 and 1996 were the only changes. The commodities that ranked from sixth to tenth places were hogs, cattle and calves, wheat, vegetables and other hay. All items in the 6th through 10th categories remained in the position. These top ten commodities accounted for 96.1 percent of all cash receipts.

County rankings based on total cash receipts produced some changes comparing 1997 with 1996. Mercer, Darke, Wayne, Licking, Putnam, Hardin, Clark, Wood, Seneca and Logan were ranked in the first through tenth places, respectively. Wayne county continued to be ranked number one in milk, cattle and calves, and oats and hay during 1997. Mercer maintained first place ranking in hogs, poultry and other livestock. Wood county moved to first place for corn and retained first place for wheat. Van Wert county moved to first place in soybeans, while Lake maintained first place for other crops.
