REYNOLDSBURG, OH (March 30, 2021) – It’s time to get your hands dirty and start growing! The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and OSU Extension Offices are kicking off the second year of the Victory Gardens Program. Due to high demand, the program is expanding from 10 to 25 counties across the state, with 8,300 seed packets available free to the public to get people planting.

Now that the spotted lanternfly has been identified in Jefferson County, the Ohio Department of Agriculture Division of Plant Health has drafted new rules in Chapter 901:5-56 to address the invasive insect. On March 10, 2021, the rules were submitted to stakeholders. The stakeholder comment period will remain open until March 24, 2021.

Since there is now an established Spotted Lanternfly population in Jefferson County, be on the look out for quarantine procedures for the area in the near future from the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Once the rules are publicly available, we will post them here on our county website and Facebook page.

If you are in need of soil test kits or fact sheets, let us know and we will get them mailed to you.

Our office is now serving as a drop off location for ODA for these seeds. Stop by during office hours Mondays or Fridays 8AM to noon or Wednesday afternoons to submit samples - please call ahead.
