The Ohio Department of Agriculture will be sponsoring a collection for farmers wishing to dispose of unwanted pesticides on September 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Kidron Livestock Auction (behind the barns), 4885 Kidron Rd., Apple Creek, Ohio 44606.
The pesticide collection and disposal service are free of charge, but only farm chemicals will be accepted. Paint, antifreeze, solvents, and household or non-farm pesticides will not be accepted.

The Ohio State University Extension offices in Jefferson and Harrison Counties are currently accepting new applications for the 2019 Master Gardener Volunteer training program. Master Gardener Volunteers in Ohio contributed over 180,000 hours of service each year and offer assistance with home horticultural questions, pest identification, school programs, demonstrations, research, and continuing education programs.

The Ohio State University Extension is currently seeking applications for a part-time 4-H / Agriculture & Natural Resources Program Assistant in Jefferson County, Ohio. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing support for all aspects of 4-H and Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) programming in Jefferson County, providing excellent customer service for clientele phone calls and office walk-ins, contributing to the county plan-of-work, and assisting with the maintenance of the county Extension website and social media accounts.

You may have heard that the periodical cicadas (Brood VIII) will emerge in the northern part of Jefferson County this year. The key factor that drives emergence is soil temperature, which has to reach above 65 F. We have hit 65 F, so we should be seeing them in the next few days.

For those who would love to garden but have back or joint pain that gets in the way, watch the new webinar from Laura Akgerman, Disability Services Coordinator with the Ohio AgrAbility Program at Ohio State University Extension. This webinar covers some easy ways to make gardening easier for those who have arthritis and regular pain caused by working outdoors. Also available with the webinar are several handouts that cover universal design, gardening stretches, and tools and equipment modifications.
